English Studies Students Take First Place in Celebration of Scholarship Undergraduate Session
Published: April 25, 2022.
English Studies students won 1st place in the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Concurrent Session at the 2022 ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ Celebration of Scholarship.
Morgan Jennings, Christian Mietus, and Melissa Vicente won the award for the Community Engaged Learning Project they created in ENGL 30000 - Introduction to Professional Writing, entitled, “Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project!” For their project, the students worked with the community organization, Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project, an immigrant rights nonprofit.
The team first researched and learned about the organization’s goals, mission, strengths, and challenges and then created/designed a detailed report, offering recommendations to support their volunteer and donation outreach as well as their social media presence. Then they created a number of savvy documents for the organization, including brochures, flyers, business cards, raffle tickets, fundraising documents, and social media content. The group learned the importance of writing, collaboration, and how professional writing is such an important tool for community empowerment.
